Deadline: 15 February 2024
Applications are now open for the Mirror Awards 2024 for Journalists. The Mirror Awards are the most important prizes for recognising excellence in reporting in the media industry.
Now in their 18th year, the Mirror Awards recognise the best reporting, analysis and commentary covering the media industry and its role in our economy, culture and democracy. Established by the SI Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in 2006, the awards honour reporters, producers, editors and teams of writers who reflect their own industry for the benefit of the public.

- Writers of any age or professional status can apply or be nominated.
- Individuals can submit up to three entries in total. If more than three entries are received, only the first three entries submitted will be accepted.
- Written works must be submitted with a URL (where applicable) and in PDF format. Podcasts and audio or video stories must be submitted with a URL.
- Individuals can submit more than one entry per category. However, the same piece cannot be entered in more than one category.
- Each entry must be sent separately.
- Entries may be used in whole or in part at the awards ceremony or to publicise the event. The judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be kept.
- No prize will be awarded in a category if no entry is deemed worthy of mention by the judges.
- Newhouse School will present a prize for each winning entry. Additional copies of the prize can be purchased.
- No-one can win a category more than three times in a five-year period. Entries from anyone who has won three times in the last five years will be excluded.
- The judges reserve the right to move entries if placed incorrectly or considered more appropriate in another category.
Evaluation criteria
Entries will be judged on three criteria:
- Work excellence: What is the overall quality of the writing and news gathering for each piece? This includes careful attention to delivery.
- Framing the question: Does the author use history to provide a broader perspective on the media and its role in society?
- Suitability for the target audience: Does the author use language and examples that make sense to the target audience? It is expected, for example, that articles published for a commercial audience will have a slightly more technical tone than those for consumer magazines.
Application
All entries must be submitted before 15 February 2024.
