Deadline November 27, 2022
MANIFEST is looking for artists motivated to contribute new artistic perspectives to reimagine Europe's collective memory of the transatlantic slave trade.
MANIFEST is an artistic and educational initiative that will support the creation of 12 artworks. The artworks should seek to enhance the re-imagining of Europe's collective memory of the transatlantic slave trade. The works will be developed through an Artistic Journey with the help and facilitation of artistic supervisors, academic researchers, and production partners.
Throughout the Artistic Journey, artists will participate in residencies and be encouraged to work with new technologies. The final works will be produced in digital formats in Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), video or audio formats – sound and spoken art.
Benefits
- Exposure will be achieved through MANIFEST's outreach and engagement activities, such as newsletters, announcements, networking and events, social media, video and photo documentation, and general promotion of MANIFEST's work through its extensive network of partners. Selected artists will also be invited to an exhibition at the Final Event in Nantes.
- A cross-border and interdisciplinary opportunity for artistic exchange and enrichment with other artists from across Europe, including activities and study visits with partners and collaborators.
- Support for the artist's development and in-depth knowledge of the main topics of MANIFEST, provided by experts and facilitators such as artistic supervisors, academic researchers, and production partners.
- Potential additional benefits resulting from outreach activities, such as fees and contributions from art venues.
- Honorarium (3000 EUR total) for participating in all MANIFEST residencies, events and activities.
- Access to a budget of 1,000 EUR for conceptual activities, artwork support materials, and significant additional production support from partners for AR, VR, and digital media development.
- Three prizes (each of 3500 EUR) for three art projects selected in the Final Event. Teams receive the same prize, with no adjustment for the number of members. Note that, if selected, art collectives will need to choose one member to receive the funds, unless they are incorporated as an LLC or other legal entity.
- Reimbursement of travel and accommodation expenses for artists at all MANIFEST events.
What can they endure?
- Works that reflect on the individual or collective memory of the transatlantic slave trade.
- Artwork that can be enhanced by digital media and technologies, specifically VR, AR, videography, and audio, sound, and spoken art (no prior experience is necessary, but you should be interested in actively working with one of the formats).
- Works of art that take into account the opinions and sensibilities of community members.
- They welcome all artists to perform their work in multiple languages if needed, but please note that the official working language at MANIFEST is English.
What are they expecting?
- Participation: They expect selected artists to participate in all designated MANIFEST events, including artist residencies, workshops, and the final event. Please note that participation includes two residencies – each lasting ten days (20 days total).
- Attendance: Selected artists are expected to participate in and engage with online meetings, interviews, webinars, consultation sessions, and progress reviews, and contribute to the project report.
- Production workshops: Artists selected for VR/AR productions will need to attend production sessions in Copenhagen on dates agreed upon with Khora.
- Engagement: Artists must be committed to the goals of MANIFEST. As success depends on the activation and engagement of the European public, artists are encouraged to support MANIFEST's overall communication using their personal and professional communication channels and networks.
- Commitment: A contract with the MANIFEST Consortium, open to proposals from artists, will define the terms and conditions of intellectual property rights for digital artworks. In any case, any participating artist will be required to grant all necessary rights for the dissemination of the work in any activities directly related to this Project.
