Applications are now open for the Young African Ambassadors for Peace (AYAP) 2023/2024 . As part of efforts to advance the African Union's (AU) Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) agenda, the former Department of Peace and Security (now the Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security, PAPS) launched Youth for Peace (Africa) (Y4P) in September 2018, the former Department of Peace and Security (now the Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security, PAPS), launched Youth for Peace (Africa) (Y4P) in September 2018, with the primary aim of facilitating the meaningful participation of African youth across the peace and security spectrum, and deterring their participation in violence.
To improve youth participation in the peace and security agenda on the continent, the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC), during its 807th meeting, requested the AU Commission to appoint five regional African Youth Ambassadors for Peace (AYAP) to work with the AU Youth Envoy in advocating for the promotion of peace and security on the continent.
The AYAPs, working under the direct supervision of the leadership of the AUC PAPS Department, will advocate for the promotion and defence of youth participation in peace and security issues at the regional level and across Africa. Specifically, the AYAPs will promote the realisation of the five priorities of the Continental Framework on Youth, Peace and Security (CFYPS), which are guided by Article 17 of the AU Youth Charter (2006) and United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCRs). 2250 (2015), 2419 (2018) e 2535 (2020).
AYAPs' mission
AYAPs should:
- Advocate for the promotion of young people's rights in your region;
- Advocate for and raise awareness about the AU Continental Framework for Youth Peace and Security (CFYPS) and its Ten-Year Implementation Plan in your region;
- Encourage and support AU member states in the region with the coordination of the Y4P programme to improve the development of National Action Plans and their implementation in their region;
- Implement regional youth activities covering the five (5) CFYPS priority areas;
- On request, represent AU PAPS at meetings, training sessions and workshops.
Eligibility
The application is open to all young Africans with a demonstrated commitment and significant contribution to the promotion of sustainable peace and security on the continent. Applications from eligible young people are particularly encouraged, including young women, displaced persons and people with disabilities who fulfil the following criteria:
- Be between 15 and 35 years old in conjunction with the AU Youth age;
- Hold a university degree in international relations, peace and conflict, political science, law and related fields; a master's degree would be an added advantage; or have at least 2 years' experience in peace and security, with a demonstrated capacity for advocacy on youth, peace and security issues, as well as resource mobilisation;
- Have experience in promoting and supporting peace processes, especially in initiating and facilitating multi-actor dialogues and mediation efforts;
- Have a strong history with the local community/area where you work;
- Strong communication and defence skills;
- English, French, Arabic, Portuguese, Swahili and Spanish are the AU working languages. Fluency in any AU working language is required; knowledge of another AU language would be an advantage.

- A short essay (no more than 2 pages) detailing how the candidate is qualified to fill out the application, as well as how to make an impact on peace and stability on the continent.
