The Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) is pleased to announce the application period for the Gender Just Climate Solutions Award 2024! We invite grassroots organisations, activists and women-led and gender equality groups working on climate change issues around the world to apply.
Application deadline: Sunday 21 July 2024, 23:59 CEST
Eligibility:
- Projects must have been operational for at least a year.
- Only non-governmental initiatives are eligible.
- The initiative must fit into one of the three award categories.
About the WGC: Established in 2009, the Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) is one of the nine stakeholder groups of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Made up of 33 women's and environmental civil society organisations, the WGC ensures that women's voices and rights are central to the UNFCCC's processes for a sustainable and just future.
History of the award: Launched in 2015, the Gender Just Climate Solutions Awards highlight real solutions for a fairer, more equal and healthier planet. Previous winners include women-owned energy cooperatives, defence of women's land ownership rights and reforestation projects led by ethnic women.
Award categories:
- Technical Solutions for the Climate: Gender-sensitive technologies such as water, renewable energy, food production, digitalisation and waste reduction.
- Non-Technical Climate Solutions: Focus on behavioural change, mutual learning, skills sharing and capacity building.
- Transformational Climate Initiatives: Address governance, institutional or social change and challenge patriarchal norms.
Assessment criteria: Projects will be judged on their contribution to:
- Women's Rights and Gender Equality: Equal access to benefits, alleviation of women's workload, empowerment and promotion of democratic rights.
- Climate Resilience: Local leadership, self-sufficiency and contributions to climate mitigation and adaptation.
- Expansion and transfer: Replicability, interconnections with cross-cutting issues such as peace-building, natural resource management and health.
Selection and Award: An international jury will select three winning projects (one per category), each of which will receive a prize:
- A cash prize of 5,000 euros.
- Travelling expenses for one person to attend the awards ceremony at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
- A mentoring programme offered by WECF and WGC members, in partnership with the Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN).
Up to 20 nominated projects will be presented in the Gender and Climate Solutions publication, distributed at COP29 and published on the WGC and WECF websites.

- Registration closes: Sunday 21 July, midnight CEST
