Funding opportunities for education research in Africa

The Regional Teacher Initiative for Africa (TRTI) invites researchers to submit research proposals that explore critical issues related to teacher education on the African continent. This initiative aims to strengthen research capacity and the evidence base to improve the quality of teacher education and, consequently, student learning outcomes.

TRTI recognises the crucial importance of teachers in transforming education systems and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, teachers in Africa face significant challenges, including a lack of adequate training, limited resources and poor working conditions. Research is essential to identify and address these challenges, informing evidence-based policies and practices.

Research proposals must focus on one of the following thematic areas:

* Teacher preparation and professional development
* Effective teaching and learning practices
* Teacher education policies and systems
* Equity and inclusion in teacher education

Proposals should demonstrate relevance to the African context, methodological rigour and the potential to impact policy and practice. Researchers are encouraged to collaborate with partner institutions in Africa and beyond to strengthen research capacity and ensure the broad dissemination of results.

The TRTI will provide funding for research projects of up to three years. The selected researchers will receive technical support and guidance throughout the research process. The results of the research will be shared through publications, conferences and other platforms to inform stakeholders and promote dialogue on teacher education in Africa.

This initiative is a unique opportunity for researchers to contribute to the advancement of teacher education and, by extension, to improving student learning outcomes across Africa. Researchers are strongly encouraged to submit innovative and impactful research proposals that can make a significant difference to the lives of African teachers and students.
