Registration is now open for the Getty Conservation Guest Scholars 2025-2026 . Through the Conservation Guest Scholars Programme, the Getty offers opportunities to academics or established professionals who have achieved distinction in the field of cultural heritage conservation.
Recipients reside at the Conservation Institute for a three- or six-month residency, in which they carry out their own projects free of work-related obligations, make use of research collections at the Getty Centre and Getty Villa, and participate with other Getty scholars, fellows and interns in the intellectual life of the Getty.
Benefits
Conservation Guest Scholars can reside for three to six months:
- Three-month residence: September-December or January-March or April-June: US$ 21,500
- Six-month residence: September-March or January-June: US$ 43,000
The scholarship also includes a workstation at the Conservation Institute, research assistance, a travel grant, a flat in the Getty school housing complex and an available health option.
Eligibility
- Applications are welcome from researchers and professionals of all nationalities working in conservation, historic preservation, heritage science, heritage studies and related fields. Applicants should have at least seven years of professional experience and an established track record of publications and other contributions to the field. Individuals from under-represented groups in the field of cultural heritage conservation are encouraged to apply.
- Proposals for post-doctoral research or research that contributes to a PhD or other academic degree will not be considered. Recent PhD graduates in chemistry and other physical or materials sciences should apply for the Postdoctoral Fellowship in Conservation Sciences.
- The Conservation Institute will consider proposals that require the use of its scientific laboratories; however, use depends on the availability of laboratory facilities and staff time and cannot be guaranteed. If selected, fellows must be prepared to conduct research independent of the Science department staff.
- Previous recipients of the Conservation Guest Scholar Grant can apply again after a six-year waiting period.
- Current Getty staff and their immediate families are not eligible for conservation visitor scholarships.
Selection criteria
Conservation Visiting Scholar Grants are awarded on a competitive basis. Applications are assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
- overall quality of the application;
- how the project would contribute to the advancement of practice in the field of conservation;
- the candidate's previous achievements;
- the candidate's qualifications to carry out the project; and
- how the project would benefit from the Getty's resources, including the Getty's library and collections.
