Overview
The Generation Google Scholarship: for women in computer science was created to help undergraduate computer science students excel in technology and become leaders in the field. Selected students will receive an award of 7,000 euros (or local equivalent) for the 2023-2024 academic year. The Google Generation Scholarship: for women in computer science will be awarded based on the strength of each applicant's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, demonstrated leadership and academic achievement.
The programme is open to students who meet all the minimum qualifications and we strongly encourage women interested in computer science to apply. Former recipients of the following scholarships: Generation Google Scholarship, Generation Google Scholarship: for women in gaming, Generation Google Scholarship: for women in computer science in Ireland, Generation Google Scholarship: for supply chain and fulfilment, Google Lime Scholarship, Google Student Veterans of America Scholarship, Women Techmakers Scholarship for Computer Science, Women Techmakers Scholarship for Gaming, Google Europe Students with Disabilities Scholarship, or Venkat Panchapakesan Scholarships India are not eligible to apply again.
Who can apply?
To apply, candidates must:
- Be currently enrolled as a full-time student on a bachelor's degree programme at an accredited university or college for the academic year 2022-2023
- Intends to be enrolled or accepted as a full-time student on a bachelor's degree programme at an accredited university in Europe, the Middle East or Africa for the academic year 2023-2024
- Studying computer science, computer engineering or a closely related technical field
- Demonstrate a solid academic record
- Exemplify leadership and demonstrate a passion for improving the representation of under-represented groups in computer science and technology
Application process
You will be asked to fill in an online application which includes:
- General information (e.g. contact details and details of your current and intended universities)
- CV
- Academic transcripts from your current institution
- Answers to short-answer questions
Essay questions:
The two short-answer essay questions below are designed to assess your problem-solving skills and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Each answer to the two questions below should be 500 words or less.
- Tell me about a time when you faced a complex problem with no clear path to a solution. Describe the steps you took to reach the solution in detail. What resources and solutions did you consider? What did you learn from this experience? Bear in mind that this could be a problem you faced at school, at work, in extracurricular activities or at home.
- From your personal experience, describe a barrier that prevents equal access to the field of technology. What do you believe to be the root cause? What actions have you taken to address this inequality and what actions do you intend to take? Please focus at least half of your answer on the actions you have taken. Bear in mind that impact can happen in many ways and on different scales.
IMPORTANT: Before starting the application, please have the following ready for upload:
- PDF copy of your CV (if applicable, include leadership positions, extracurricular activities and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in your CV)
- PDF copy of your current or most recent transcript (unofficial is acceptable)
Terms and conditions
The Google Generation Scholarship: for women in computer science is open to qualified students who meet the eligibility criteria. Women interested in computer science are strongly encouraged to apply. The scholarship award must be spent on tuition, fees, books, supplies and equipment needed for the students' classes at their primary university.
Scholarship recipients must be enrolled as full-time students for the 2023-2024 academic year. Enrolment will be verified after the winners have been selected, and all scholarship payments will be made directly to the student's university to be used for tuition and education-related expenses. We will withhold the award for any scholar who no longer meets the eligibility requirements and revoke the award for any scholar who does not maintain the eligibility requirements.
Winners will receive instructions from Google on how to receive the prize. Failure to complete these steps within the specified timeframe will disqualify recipients from receiving the prize. Recipients may defer their award for up to one (1) year from the time of the originally planned payment, on a case-by-case basis, as determined by Google. Google employees are not eligible to apply for Google scholarships. Persons who are (1) residents of embargoed countries, (2) ordinarily resident in embargoed countries, or (3) otherwise prohibited by applicable export controls and sanctions programmes are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.
