Applications are now open for the Investigative Journalism Scholarship Fund 2024 . The Fund for Investigative Journalism provides grants and other support for reporters to produce high-quality, impartial and non-partisan investigative stories that have an impact. They provide direct support to investigative journalists for news stories, books, documentaries and podcasts that reveal wrongdoing by powerful people or institutions.

The Fund for Investigative Journalism was founded in 1969 by the late Philip M. Stern, a public-spirited philanthropist who dedicated his life to "balancing the scales of justice". Stern was convinced that small amounts of money invested in the work of determined journalists would produce enormous results in the fight against racism, poverty, corporate greed and government corruption.

Subsidies

They provide various types of subsidies:

• Regular subsidies They analyse proposals three or four times a year for grants of up to US$ 10,000. The next deadline is Monday 29 January 2024. 
• Initial financing:  They provide small grants, of up to US$ 2,500, for preliminary reports that can lead to full investigations. These grants cover costs such as open records requests and travelling to present initial reports. 
• Accelerated subsidies In rare cases, they provide an accelerated review for proposals that are extremely urgent and cannot wait for the regular review cycle. These proposals are analysed on an ongoing basis and applicants receive a decision within two to four weeks.
• Accompanying grants : They accept proposals for timely follow-up coverage of original research that was produced with grants from the Fund. Beneficiaries can request expedited review for follow-up grants of up to US$ 2,500.
• Emergency Grants: Threats to US Democracy These grants are for stories that break new ground and expose wrongdoing related to threats to democracy in the US for up to US$ 10,000. They will analyse proposals on an ongoing basis. Grant decisions can be expected within 2 to 4 weeks of submitting an application.

• Freelance journalists, reporters and media outlets are eligible for grants;
• Research can be for print, online or broadcast stories, books, documentaries or podcasts.

Application

They analyse applications for regular grants three or four times a year. The deadline to apply for regular grants is Monday 29 January 2024 at 11.59pm Eastern Time. Applicants receive a decision around six weeks after the deadline.
