Youth Fund for Climate Justice 2026: Empowering the Next Generation in Cape Verde

Youth Fund for Climate Justice 2026 This represents a fundamental boost to engaging young Cape Verdeans in the fight against climate change. This pioneering initiative aims to transform environmental concerns into concrete actions, recognizing the central role of youth in building a sustainable future. In an archipelago vulnerable to the effects of climate change – such as rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and water scarcity – this fund emerges as a strategic tool to foster innovation, leadership, and resilience.

Strategic Objectives

The fund's main mission is to empower young people between the ages of 15 and 30 through three pillars:

  1. Environmental EducationTo offer training in sustainable resource management, renewable energy, and climate adaptation.
  2. Local ProjectsFunding community initiatives, such as reforestation, water harvesting systems, or awareness campaigns.
  3. Political AdvocacySupporting youth participation in national and international forums to influence climate policies.

Why Cape Verde?

The country's geographical location, combined with its economic dependence on tourism and fishing, makes it particularly susceptible to environmental crises. According to the World Bank, 901,300 of the population lives in coastal areas, threatened by erosion and extreme weather events. The fund aims to create a network of young leaders capable of articulating local responses to global challenges, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Priority Areas of Action

The supported projects should focus on:

  • Technological InnovationDigital solutions for environmental monitoring or waste management.
  • Circular EconomyPromoting green businesses, such as sustainable crafts or resilient agriculture.
  • Ecosystem ProtectionConservation of critical marine and terrestrial areas, such as the Fogo Natural Park or the turtle reserves in Maio.

This fund is intended for youth groups, community associations, students, and individual entrepreneurs residing in Cape Verde. Selection criteria include:

  • Relevance of the project to local needs.
  • Potential for medium-term impact.
  • Community involvement and inclusion of vulnerable groups.
