The African Heritage The World Wildlife Fund (AWHF) is offering conservation grants to African States Parties to implement projects and activities that focus on improving the sustainability and health status of their communities. conservation of World Heritage properties.

As part of AWHF's contribution to improving the conservation and management of World Heritage properties, an annual application for Conservation Grants was created. In general, Conservation Grants have helped African States Parties undertake projects that have had a positive impact on the state of conservation of sites on the World Heritage List.

Budget
  • The AWHF grant will only cover direct costs related to project activities.
  • Applicants must provide a detailed budget in US$ for each activity to be implemented.
  • Applicants must indicate the States Parties' contribution to the project.
Duration
  • The projects must be implemented between May 2024 and February 2025 (within 9 months).
Eligibility Criteria
  • Country/Region - African continent.
  • Project activities are restricted to World Heritage Sites, as declared by UNESCO.
  • Project proposals should address the challenges affecting the State of Conservation of selected World Heritage properties (projects that address the conservation issues raised in the State of Conservation (SoC) reports and the decisions taken by the World Heritage Committee have an added advantage).
  • Projects focussed on entrepreneurial initiatives, the development of young people or addressing issues of sustainability in World Heritage properties.
  • Projects aimed at improving the legibility and accessibility of World Heritage properties through digital technologies.
  • Who can apply? Government institutions involved in the management and protection of World Heritage Sites.
  • The application must be approved by the Director/Director of the heritage institution/organisation accompanied by a cover letter approving the project.
Evaluation and Selection Process
  • All applications will be evaluated before a final decision is made. The evaluation will be based on the "Key funding criteria" described in section D of the application form, including the following:
    • Relevance and contribution of the project to meeting the challenges of conservation and sustainability in a particular world heritage site;
    • Quality of project design and use of innovative and economical approaches;
    • Clearly articulated, realistic and measurable outcomes;
    • Level of stakeholder involvement and participation;
    • Precise and realistic budget.
