Registration for the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance International Program in Public Health Leadership 2024 Applications are now open. The International Public Health Leadership Program is an eight-month program for emerging leaders working in or closely with African Ministries of Health. A flagship program of the University of Washington's Evans School, the IPPHL expands the political and leadership acumen of leaders to develop and implement rigorous public policy solutions and transform health systems.

The curriculum focuses on the fundamentals of policy analysis, evidence and evaluation, implementation, and personal leadership development. Since 2017, IPPHL has trained 150 public health professionals in 29 African countries.

Financing

  • The program is fully funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and is partnered with the Center for Creative Leadership.

Eligibility

  • Open to mid-career public health professionals in Africa, working in government, for a government initiative/partner or entity at the federal, regional, state or provincial level;
  • Responsible for managing public health program(s) with supervisory responsibilities, whether individually or as part of a team; Responsible for the performance of public health programs and/or the management of frontline health workers;
  • To hold a degree related to public health or to be a medical professional;
  • A citizen and resident of a country in Africa;
  • Strong English language skills and the ability to articulate the various challenges of implementing public health policies or programs.

Application

  • Complete the online registration form.
    • 3 short-answer questions limited to 1,500 characters each on the following topics (see registration for full questions and expectations):
      • How have you used leadership and management skills to effect change in the past (or in your current role), and what personal characteristics have helped you to work effectively in leadership challenges and influence change?
      • A critical challenge you face in your role or in your health program that you would like to address as your policy issue across the IPPHL.
      • How will the leadership, policy analysis, and influencing skills learned during this program further your career aspirations?
    • Send your resume or CV in PDF format. 
    • Upload a Release Statement from your supervisor in PDF format. This statement must come from an individual or department with the authority to release you from time spent during both the in-person and virtual portions of the program, some of which may occur during work hours.
    • Upload a letter of recommendation from your employer or supervisor in PDF format. Your letter of recommendation should include:
      • Several ways in which a leadership and policy program like IPPHL would support your professional development.
      • A specific strength or talent that you would add to the program.
      • Two ways in which your participation in IPPHL would benefit your larger team and organization.
      • A statement of intent from your organization regarding participation in program elements that canceled your contribution, such as research.
