Data limit: 4 December 2023

Applications are now open for the TWAS-UNESCO 2023 Association Scheme . In collaboration with UNESCO and several centres of excellence in the South, TWAS sets up a Joint Membership Scheme to enable competent researchers from the South to visit these centres regularly. An associate is appointed for three years, during which time they can visit a Centre twice for research collaboration.

In 1994, in cooperation with UNESCO, TWAS set up an Association Scheme to help combat the brain drain affecting many developing countries. The programme supports regular visits by researchers from developing countries to centres of excellence in the South. Almost 300 centres of excellence in the South have agreed to take part in the programme.

Benefits

  • The Association covers the member's travelling expenses and a monthly contribution of USD $300 for incidental local expenses. The accommodation centre covers accommodation, meals and provides research facilities.

Eligibility

  • Candidates must have a doctorate or equivalent degree. The selection of associates is highly competitive; appointments are made on the basis of merit.
  • Special attention is given to scientists from isolated institutions in developing countries.
  • Female scientists are especially encouraged to apply.

Application

Applicants must complete the online application form. When completing the online application, candidates also need to upload the following documentation:

  • a scanned copy of the applicant's passport, even if it has expired (page with the applicant's first and last name);
  • Declaration of Support from the Head of the Institution of Origin;
  • CV of the candidate (maximum 4 pages);
  • a complete list of the candidate's publications;
  • doctorate certificate;
  • two letters of recommendation from two referees, one of which must be an expert from another country;
  • a recent letter of invitation - on the letterhead of the host institution - from one of the specific institutions in the files available here. It should contain the proposed time of the visits (two to three months for each visit) and refer to the proposal for co-operation. It should be made clear that the applicant and the proposed guest intended to liaise on the scientific work to be carried out during a visit and that the conditions for carrying out the work have been agreed in terms of the timing of the visit and the facilities available.
