International Photography Competition “Rest of the World 2026”
“Rest of the World 2026” emerges as a unique opportunity for professional and amateur photographers to capture the multifaceted essence of Cape Verde. This international competition, which for the first time chooses the country as its main setting, aims to immortalize the scenic, cultural, and human richness of this singular archipelago. At a time when sustainability, local heritage, and global dialogue are becoming imperatives, the initiative proposes to bring together artistic perspectives on a destination that is both a historical meeting point and a beacon of contemporary creativity.
Cape Verde, comprised of ten islands in the central Atlantic, offers a mosaic of contrasts: from the pristine beaches of Sal and Boa Vista to the dramatic volcanic landscapes of Fogo, passing through the vibrant neighborhoods of Cidade Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Furthermore, the fusion of African, Portuguese, and Creole influences confers a unique identity, reflected in the musical traditions, gastronomy, and welcoming spirit of its people. The competition challenges participants to explore this diversity through three central thematic axes:
- Landscapes in TransformationHow are climate change and sustainable development shaping island ecosystems?
- Intangible HeritageTo document cultural expressions, from morna to funaná, and the faces that keep the traditions alive.
- Innovation in Island ContextsCommunity projects, technological solutions, and stories of resilience in the face of geographical challenges.
The initiative, organized in partnership with the General Directorate of Arts and Creativity of Cape Verde, European cultural institutions, and local sponsors, is not limited to awarding exceptional images. Winners will have access to mentorship with renowned names in photography, traveling exhibitions in capitals such as Lisbon and Praia, and artistic residencies to further develop long-term projects. In addition, a special fund will be allocated to the digital preservation of photographic collections at risk in Cape Verdean communities, ensuring that collective memory is shared with future generations.
Beyond its artistic impact, the competition aims to boost creative tourism, attracting visitors seeking authentic experiences and meaningful connections. “This is a window for the world to understand Cape Verde beyond the postcards,” says curator Ana Lúcia Santos. “We want images that tell stories of adaptation, hope, and reinvention—narratives that inspire not only through aesthetics but also through their message.”
Those interested should submit portfolios of up to 10 photographs, accompanied by short texts that contextualize the works. The jury, composed of internationally renowned professionals, will evaluate originality, thematic coherence, and relevance to the competition's values: diversity, sustainability, and intercultural dialogue.
