Deadline: 1st November 2023
Registration for the International Composting Awareness Week (ICAW) 2024 poster competition now open . Every year, the International Composting Awareness Week Committee holds a poster competition to choose a new design for the annual poster. There is always a new theme for ICAW, which is highlighted on the poster, as well as the data for ICAW. The dates for 2024 are 5 to 11 May 2024.
The theme of the 2024 International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is truly a collaborative and international effort. Again this year, they have teamed up with the International Compost Alliance (ICA), which includes composting associations from all over the world, to select: COMPOSTO... Nature's Climate Champion! The theme was chosen by the international partners incorporating the collective focus on one of the initiatives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is "Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts".
The 2024 theme better reflects the UN's objective, emphasising the role that compost plays in combating climate change. These roles include:
- Methane reduction: Methane, a greenhouse gas twenty-five times more powerful than carbon dioxide, can be significantly reduced by recycling organics instead of landfilling them.
- Helping to mitigate climate change: Compost offers a significant response to climate change mitigation. The return of compost to the soil serves as a "carbon bank", helping to store carbon, thus removing it from the atmosphere.
- Reduce fertiliser inputs by reducing the pollution created to manufacture these inputs.
- Increasing resilience: Compost helps increase resilience to the effects of climate change, such as droughts and extreme weather conditions.
