Deadline: 1st November 2023
Applications are now open for the British Academy Global Professorships 2023 . With the Global Chairs, the Academy seeks to support academics who present ambitious proposals, as well as cutting-edge applications that break new ground. The Academy sees the Global Chairs as an opportunity to apply to carry out high-risk, curiosity-driven research in the humanities and social sciences, which enables the awardees and the UK host institutions to achieve radical change in their respective research programmes.
The Academy wants to encourage applications from historically and/or structurally disadvantaged groups and women researchers.
Applicants should intend to work in any aspect of the humanities or social sciences. Achievements involving creative practice (e.g. music composition and performance, visual practice, creative writing and film production) are welcome, but will be considered to fall within the remit of the British Academy only when they form part of an integrated project of critical or historical importance.
Financing
- The Academy will provide up to £900,000 per award.
- The awards are expected to run for four years each, from a start date to be agreed with the British Academy. The start date should be no earlier than 1st March 2024 - 30th September 2024.
Eligibility
- Fellowships are available to mid-career and senior researchers in any discipline of the humanities and social sciences (recognised in their field or with outstanding potential) who are currently employed outside the UK on a permanent contract (which can be part-time or full-time) or, if temporary, would normally be a contract that will not end during the course of the fellowship, unless expressly agreed with the Academy, prior to the submission of the application, that such an application would be considered eligible.
- Candidates must hold a doctorate (or have equivalent research experience).
- Applicants must be available to take unpaid leave, a long-term secondment or employment at an eligible UK institution. If this is not clear in the applicant's national setting, the Academy welcomes communication with applicants before applications are submitted. Eligible institutions include, but are not limited to, the British Institutes for International Research.
- The awards are only available to individuals, to be realised in an institutional context. Co-applicants are not permitted.
- Awards will not be granted retrospectively: this means that the work for which support is requested must not have begun before the award is announced. Applications must be for new research ideas that are coherent in themselves and cutting-edge.
- Applicants are required to provide a formal statement of support from a senior member of the proposed host institution in the UK (normally expected to be a Pro-Vice-Chancellor or equivalent, or at the very least Head of Department/Faculty/Institute).
- Applicants must be resident outside the UK at the time of enrolment. Applicants who work outside the UK, but are employed primarily by a UK institution, are not eligible to apply.
- Applicants must demonstrate that they have been in contact with their UK host institution prior to enrolment. Please note that the British Academy cannot help locate or facilitate contact with UK host institutions.
- Duplicate applications for the same purpose in more than one British Academy funding programme will not be accepted.
Application
Applications must be submitted online using the British Academy's Grant Management System, Flexi-Grant®.
Deadline for application and declarations from the head of department and current approval deadline from the host institution in the UK: Wednesday 1st November 2023 (17:00 GMT)
