The Borel Global Fellows Programme supports students from sub-Saharan Africa to pursue graduate studies in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University. The programme seeks to help eradicate food and nutrition insecurity while promoting wealth and health for subsistence farmers in sub-Saharan Africa by educating Iowa State University scientists who will become knowledge leaders living and working in sub-Saharan Africa.

Financing

  • Up to US$ 25,000 per year per student of funding is available to support postgraduate student bursaries (or a combination of a partial bursary and research funding) for up to 30 months for Masters students and up to 42 months for PhD students. Funding is also available for student and supervisor travel to and from Africa for research purposes.

Eligibility

All faculty members with a majority appointment in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University may submit an application for partial funding for graduate students. To be considered for the Borel Global Fellows Programme, a student must:

  • be admitted to a postgraduate programme at the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences;
  • be a citizen of a sub-Saharan African country;
  • commit to completing postgraduate studies as a means of preparing for a career that contributes to food security in sub-Saharan Africa;
  • complete most of their postgraduate research in sub-Saharan Africa;
  • demonstrate their intention to work and live in sub-Saharan Africa after completing their postgraduate studies.

Application

The completed application will include a letter of introduction from the head teacher, a CV from the student and a copy of the student's statement of aims. Due date each year: 15th January. The cover letters will address the major professor's commitment to providing the remaining necessary funding (typically tuition, fees and research costs) and his/her commitment to supporting the student's research in sub-Saharan Africa.
