Registration for Al Qasimi Foundation doctoral research grants 2024 are now open. The Al Qasimi Foundation's doctoral research scholarships encourage academics from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to carry out research to inform policy-making in the United Arab Emirates. The scholarships are open to PhD students of all nationalities studying at an accredited university in the UAE or abroad.

The Doctoral Research Grants financially support doctoral candidates in the research phase of their dissertations. Currently, two awards are available each year for applied research projects that have Ras Al Khaimah as the main location for collecting and analysing data.

Grant

  • The grant covers all student expenses associated with your field research in the United Arab Emirates, including return airfares, furnished accommodation for up to 12 months, a stipend to cover living costs and research support.

Eligibility

  • The candidate must be a current doctoral student at an accredited university and in good academic standing. 
  • The candidate must have a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 85 or an IELTS score of 6.5 if English is the secondary language. 
  • The candidate must have completed all their doctoral courses and be ready to conduct the field research component of their dissertation. 
  • The candidate must have a research proposal approved (or in the process of being approved) by the candidate's supervisor and postgraduate programme. The approved proposal must include a literature review and significant details about the research methodology. 
  • The proposed research must have the approval of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the candidate's home institution. 
  • The proposed research should centre on the United Arab Emirates, and specifically the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. If the research proposal includes other locations, Ras Al Khaimah should be a significant focus for data collection and analysis. 
  • The proposed research should address a closely related educational, public policy or social science question or issue. Relevant topics (depending on the research question) may include areas such as education, urban planning/development, public health, economic development, food access and energy or environmental policy.

Prospective applicants must create an account on the Foundation's grants management portal and follow the instructions for applying for doctoral research grants as soon as applications open. The online application form and all the documents listed below must be uploaded and submitted on the grants management portal by 1st March 2024 in order to be considered: 

  • Online application form on the grants management portal. 
  • A two-page essay in the form of a cover letter describing why the applicant is interested in a Doctoral Research Fellowship. The letter should address (1) previous experiences, courses and skills relevant to the proposed field research; (2) how the proposed research aligns with the mission of the Al Qasimi Foundation; (3) what the applicant hopes to gain from the field research experience; and (4) how the field research experience fits into the applicant's long-term academic and professional goals. 
  • CV or resume describing educational background, research experience and publications, professional experience, honours and awards and extracurricular activities. 
  • Current official transcripts from the candidate's doctoral programme (and official transcripts of all courses completed). 
  • Official copy of a TOEFL or IELTS score report (only required for applicants whose English is their secondary language). 
  • Copy of the approved research proposal or preliminary proposal. Indicate specific facilities, special equipment or other resource requirements needed to conduct the proposed research. The proposal should also include information on potential dates and duration of the field research component in Ras Al Khaimah. 
  • PhD research grant budget template filled in detailing itemised expenses and total grant request. 
  • Official documentation of IRB approval for the proposed research from the applicant's home institution (or plans to obtain it, if not available at the time of application) 
  • Two letters of reference addressing the suitability of the candidate. One letter should be from the applicant's doctoral supervisor and the other should be from another academic. Both letters should indicate the duration, extent and nature of the recommending party's relationship with the applicant.

All materials submitted for funding consideration will automatically become the property of the Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation for Policy Research and will not be returned to the sender.
