The Centre for African Studies is offering 1 PhD scholarship to African citizens as part of the Governance for Development in Africa Initiative, funded by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.

Mo Ibrahim Foundation Governance for Development PhD Scholarship 2022/2023 (fully funded) to the UK | Opportunities for Lawyers
Applications are invited for PhD studentships centred on the area of state capacities, governance and bureaucracy for development. This can include projects designed to understand public sector governance capacities, political agreements, state corporate relations, the governance of state-owned enterprises, the governance of development policy design and implementation, and so on. But applications should focus on the public sector/state service/civil service, governance, and development.

In order to be considered for funding, candidates must first obtain an UNCONDITIONAL OFFER for the doctorate by applying directly to the SOAS Doctoral School.

Eligible doctorates are only those within the following departments:

  • Development Studies
  • Law
  • Economy
  • International Relations/Politics
  • CISD (Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy)
  • DEFIMS (Department of Financial and Management Studies)
  • Distance learning: CEFIMS (Centre for Financial and Management Studies), DEFIMS

Once a place has been secured, candidates can apply for the scholarship. Applicants will be assessed on their academic merit by a panel made up of academic members of SOAS. The assessment of your application will be based on the information contained in your scholarship application. Please provide the following documents:

  • a copy of the unconditional offer received from the SOAS admissions office
  • CV (please include your e-mail address)
  • 2-page declaration of maximum knowledge and interest in governance issues
  • Your research proposal (as sent to the SOAS Admissions Office)
  • an academic reference (to be sent directly by the referee to ab17@soas.ac.uk)

It should be noted that CAS reserves the right not to award scholarships and will only award them if there are candidates judged to meet sufficiently high academic standards and with demonstrable interests in fields relevant to GDAI's objectives.
