Applications are now open for the Marlène and Paolo Fresco Scholarship for African Studies 2024-2025 . The Marlène and Paolo Fresco Scholarship seeks to stimulate and support increased studies on cultural exchanges between the African continent and the Mediterranean world during the period c. 1250-1750. It is a six-month residential scholarship for the period spring 2025 (January to June).
The grant is aimed at post-doctoral researchers in areas related to the study of African history, including art history, archaeology, history of expressive cultures, musicology, economic history, intellectual, political and religious history, as well as literature and languages. Preference will be given to advanced research projects that address the relationship between the African continent and Italy during the early modern period, historically understood to include the period from the 14th to the 17th century.

Costs
- The donation is US$ 5,200 per month, made possible by a generous donation from Paolo Fresco, plus a one-off supplement (maximum US$ 1,500) for relocation expenses.
- In view of the residential nature of the scholarship, scholarship holders must live in the Florence area and spend at least three days a week at the Centre. Where possible, a flat will be booked for the scholar's use, rent-free but with utility charges. If a flat is not available, a housing subsidy will be offered to help offset rental costs.
- You are responsible for obtaining your visa, travel authorisation and health cover (and, if applicable, for accompanying family members). You must determine whether a visa is required and, if necessary, obtain one before travelling.
