Deadline: 1st October 2023
Applications are now open for the Charles Bullard Fellowship in Forestry Research 2024-2025 . Harvard University awards a limited number of Bullard Fellowships each year to individuals representing a variety of disciplines and approaches to the study of forest ecosystems. These full-time residential fellowships allow individuals to further their scientific and professional growth and contribute to forestry research at Harvard.
One of the main aims of the Bullard Fellowship programme is to enhance research activities at Harvard Forest and build long-term collaborations that connect Harvard Forest with other parts of the University. Fellows may be based at Harvard Forest or associated with other Harvard departments and centres, such as the Department of Organic and Evolutionary Biology, the Harvard University Center for the Environment, the Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability and the Arnold Arboretum. Bullard fellowships are not intended for postdoctoral fellows; instead, they are intended for individuals with a track record of independent study and professional achievement.
Scope of the grant
Research areas include forest ecology, tree physiology, soil biogeochemistry and microbial ecology, forest resource management, conservation and biodiversity, land use planning and public policy. Occasionally, scholarships are awarded in the areas of arts and environmental humanities. Please note that proposals in the arts and humanities must demonstrate a strong connection to research at Harvard Forest and will undergo a separate review process led by Harvard University colleagues from the appropriate discipline .
Brotherhood
- The scholarships are worth up to US$ 75,000; the value of each award depends on the duration of the scholarship. Scholars have the option of having the award paid to themselves or to the scholar's employer.
- In most cases, the grant will supplement the income received for dedicating a period to research, for example, paid sabbatical leave for individuals in academic life, federally supported appointments for training individuals in the federal civil service, or paid educational leave for individuals in the private sector. The grants are not intended to provide significant funds for original research.
- Travel stipends: All Bullard Fellows will receive a travel stipend equivalent to the cost of a round trip between the fellowship site and their base. The stipend will reflect the actual airfare or mileage (at a rate determined by the IRS) between the two, whichever is less. Bullards are responsible for the travel costs of anyone accompanying them.
Eligibility
- Bullard Fellowships are generally awarded to individuals who have established themselves in academia, the civil service or the private sector.
- Bullard scholarships are aimed at academics and professionals who have demonstrated substantial achievements and vision; recent PhD graduates are generally not suitable.
- For those in academic careers, preference is given to PhD degree holders who have obtained their degree at least two years prior to applying and who have published a monograph or at least two (humanities and social sciences) or five (STEM) articles in refereed journals or edited collections. Candidates from outside academia must demonstrate leadership in their field and propose a project that shows promise in making important contributions to forestry studies, broadly defined.
