Applications are now open for the African Fellowship for Young Energy Leaders (AFYEL) 2024 . The Africa Fellowship for Young Energy Leaders is an educational endeavour designed to invest in the next generation of energy leaders who will deliver sustainable energy access and, ultimately, a zero-carbon Africa.

The Programme's ambition is to train energy specialists, renewable energy project managers, graduates, postgraduates or PhD students in Physics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building/Construction Engineering, Physics and Solar Energy in fundamental aspects of energy generation with a specific focus on Renewable Energy Technology and opportunities for career progression in the energy value chain.

The aim is to train a competent workforce for the renewable energy industry and to train entrepreneurs who will promote access to clean energy for the 600 million people in Africa without access and retain young African talent in a crucial sector such as renewable energy, which is of paramount importance for unlocking Africa's economy. sustainable future.

The programme offers the knowledge of international experts on the small-scale, small-scale and small-scale use of four groups of renewable energy technologies through a general module. Scholars have the opportunity to choose a specialised course from the following:

  • Bioenergy
  • Hydropower
  • Photovoltaic solar energy
  • Land wind

Eligibility

  • Candidates must be between 21 and 35 years old by the application deadline.
  • Graduates, postgraduates or PhDs in Physics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, Finance/Accounting, Physics and Solar Energy, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Building and Construction Engineering or related areas.
  • They are proficient in reading, writing and speaking English.
  • They are citizens of one of the following countries: Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia or Zimbabwe.

Selection criteria

The following criteria will be used to assess the applications (not in order of importance):

  • A proven track record of leadership and achievement in the key industries in focus;
  • A demonstrated commitment to public or community service, volunteering or mentoring with regard to clean energy;
  • The ability to work co-operatively in different groups and to respect the opinions of others;
  • Strong social and communication skills;
  • An energetic and positive attitude;
  • Proven knowledge, interest and professional experience in the fields of renewable energy, economics, finance or engineering.
