The Visiting Fellowship programme offers academics at all stages of their careers funding to pursue projects that require in-depth research into the library's holdings, as well as opportunities to draw on the expertise of the staff and participate in intellectual life at Harvard.

Houghton offers fellows access to other Harvard University libraries, and opportunities to exchange knowledge and promote their research through its publications, academic and public programmes.

Recent research topics by the fellows speak to the breadth and depth of Houghton's holdings - from colonial-era Native American music to the collection of Sanskrit manuscripts, and novels of Iberian chivalry celebrating pregnancy on the London stage.

Financing

  • Fellows in the 2023-2024 cohort will receive a stipend of 4,500 dollars during the period of their appointment.

Eligibility

  • Open to applicants of all nationalities. Non-US citizens who are awarded a scholarship are required to obtain a J-1 visa. Harvard University may sponsor the visa, but fellows are responsible for paying the associated fees and will receive their stipend 2-3 weeks after their arrival at Houghton Library.
  • PhD students, post-docs, academics and independent scholars, as well as curators and other library, archive and museum professionals, are welcome to apply.
  • Scholarships are not normally awarded to academics who live within walking distance of the library.
  • Scholars are welcome to apply every year. However, if a scholarship is awarded, a period of 5 years must elapse before another scholarship can be awarded.
  • They particularly welcome applications from students and academics from under-represented groups in academia, including women, black, indigenous, and other people of colour, first generation academics, and people with disabilities.

How to apply

  • a project proposal (1,000 words maximum)
  • a preliminary list of Houghton collection materials
