BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award  recognises contributions fundamental in a wide range of areas of scientific knowledge, technology, humanities and artistic creation, as listed in this condition of appeal.

The Climate Change Prize recognises both research efforts to tackle this challenge and forceful actions informed by the best science. In the humanities and social,the award will alternate annually between these two disciplinary fields, with this fourteenth edition dedicated to the social sciences. Finally, the Music and Opera category includes composition, instrumental and vocal performance, musical and stage direction, and the creation of video art associated with musical or operatic works.

Prize

  • The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award includes 400,000 euros,diploma and a commemorative work in each of its eight categories.
  • If a reward is shared by more than one person, the monetary value will be distributed equally among all recipients.
  • All scholarships, regardless of their category, will be subject to withholding taxes and other taxes provided for in current legislation, which will be deducted from the total amount.

Requirements

  • Candidates can be one or more individuals of any nationality, without any numerical limitations, who have made independent or convergent contributions to a given advance, either through formal collaboration (with candidates from one or more groups) or through parallel work. The awards are also open to scientific or cultural organisations that collectively make extraordinary contributions to scientific knowledge, cultural creation or the fight against climate change.
  • Rewards cannot be granted posthumously.

Appointment

Self-nomination is not permitted.

Any organisation or scientific or cultural institution can submit applications, following its own internal procedures. These include:

  • Scientific or artistic societies and organisations
  • National and Regional Academies of Science or Culture
  • Public or private research and development centres
  • University schools, departments or institutes and research or teaching institutes
  • Hospital departments and biomedical research centres
  • Music schools
  • Orchestras, opera houses and opera associations
  • Public bodies and supranational, national or regional organisations substantially involved in climate change analysis and/or activities
  • Other scientific, cultural and environmental organisations

Nobel Prize winners in one of its categories are also eligible for nomination, as are previous winners of the BBVA Foundation's Frontiers of Knowledge Award.
