The competition is open to any African student currently enrolled on any undergraduate or postgraduate programme at any accredited university worldwide. They are invited to write on the topic: Pathways to protecting freedom of expression in Africa: opportunities for new approaches to an old problem.
African Liberty was founded in 2007 as a project of the Cato Institute and IMANI Africa, later the Atlas Network. It is a platform to promote individual freedom, peace and prosperity in Africa by fostering civil discussion and debate on social, legal, economic and global issues affecting Africans. They identify and train promising young African freedom advocates in professional critical writing and help them launch careers in journalism and public policy, working with Africa-focused think tanks and partner media.
Eligibility
- The candidate must be of African descent by virtue of having the nationality of an African country;
- Must be enrolled in any degree programme at any accredited university anywhere in the world or must have completed a degree programme within a maximum of three years from the day of the application deadline.
Prizes
- Winner: cash prize of $500
- First runner-up: cash prize of US$ 300
- Runner-up: US$ 200 cash price
- Third and fourth runners-up: US$ 100 each.
- The five best works will be published on the African Liberty and Students For Liberty platforms.
Guidelines
- The entry must be in English, with non-English words in italics
- The inscription must be original
- The entry must be sent as a PDF with the writer's name and e-mail address provided on the first page
- No footnotes or citations
- Quotations should be limited
- The essay should be in Times New Roman, 12 point font, and justified
