Regional Energy Security and Climate Change Programme
Background and Context
The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), a German political foundation dedicated to promoting democracy, the rule of law, social and economic market structures and human rights worldwide, is pleased to announce the call for applications for the Climate Diplomacy Academy 2024. KAS operates more than 200 projects in approximately 100 countries, with a significant presence in sub-Saharan Africa through its Regional Energy Security and Climate Change Programme, established in 2016 and based in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Regional Programme aims to improve the political and social framework for climate-friendly sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa. By promoting stronger regional and international cooperation on energy, security and climate action, the programme seeks to address the pressing challenges posed by global warming, resource use and climate-related risks.
Climate Diplomacy Academy: 2024
In collaboration with Strathmore University, the 4th Climate Diplomacy Academy (CDA2024) will be held from April to June 2024. This academy comprises a series of online tutorials designed to:
a. Strengthen participants' understanding of climate change and its impacts. b. Raise awareness of climate diplomacy as a vital mechanism for driving responsive climate action at local, regional and global levels. c. Promote understanding of the challenges faced by diplomats and negotiators in their efforts to promote the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.
A three-day physical conference is scheduled for the end of June 2024 at Strathmore University, Nairobi. KAS will cover all costs related to the selected participants who will attend this conference.
Election criteria
Eligible candidates must:
i. Be under 35 years of age. ii. Be at least 3rd year undergraduate students in International Studies, Environmental Sciences, Political Science, Development Studies or related fields. iii. Have a proficient command of spoken and written English. 4. Demonstrate an interest in the current international discussions and negotiations on climate change. v. Commit to working on the tasks for approximately 5 hours per week between April and June 2024. vi. Be available to travel to Nairobi, Kenya, during the week of 17 June 2024.
