The WikiCredibility Grants Initiative (WikiCred), a Hacks/Hackers project, calls for applications from individuals, groups or organisations seeking financial support for the development of tools, projects or initiatives that strengthen the credibility and reliability of information within Wikimedia projects.

Hacks/Hackers is a rapidly expanding international grassroots journalism organisation with dozens of groups (and growing) and thousands of members on four continents (and growing). Hacks/Hackers' mission is to create a network of journalists ("hacks") and technologists ("hackers") who rethink the future of news and information.

  • A WordPress plugin to open the news
  • A new way to help assess the credibility of media sources
  • Learning product prototypes for educational purposes
  • New font structures cited in Wikipedia
  • Using Wikidata to report Covid-19 data from municipalities and government agencies
  • A graphical database of coronavirus research and concepts
  • Wikipedia's community platform against disinformation
  • Promoting credibility on Wikipedia pages with multimedia files
  • A browser extension to add context to online stories by suggesting related Wikipedia articles

  • A bot to add references to WikiData declarations

  • Helping audiences navigate challenging media

Scope and preferred topics

  • WikiCred is particularly interested in supporting the development of Wikimedia tools, projects, programmes or initiatives that benefit underprivileged communities or improve content related to timely topics such as reproductive health and electoral disinformation. Other topics will also be considered.
  • The tools should aim to strengthen sourcing practices in Wikimedia projects by improving access to reliable, high-quality sources, as well as the citations they are used to create.
  • WikiCred will also consider applications seeking funds to facilitate Wiki meetups that invite conversations about strengthening credibility in Wikimedia projects and the general information ecosystem. Sample meeting participants could include journalists, librarians, editors, teachers, media literacy groups or NGOs.

  • Prize amounts: up to US$ 10,000 per project
  • Number of Prizes: Multiple.

Eligibility criteria

  • Everyone can apply regardless of geographical location. Projects, tools and initiatives in all Wikimedia projects, as well as Wikipedias in all languages, will be considered.
