The Role of Youth in Combating Desertification and Land Degradation
The UNCCD COP-16 Youth Forum, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, brought together young leaders from around the world to address the crucial issue of desertification and land degradation. This fully-funded event provided a platform for young people to share their perspectives and contribute to global discussions on the issue.
Desertification, a process that turns fertile land into deserts, affects more than a third of the Earth's surface. Land degradation, on the other hand, refers to a reduction in the productivity and ecosystem services of land. These problems have devastating consequences for communities, leading to food shortages, poverty and conflicts.
Young people play a key role in the fight against desertification and land degradation. They are the future decision-makers and have the power to shape the policies and practices that affect the environment. The COP-16 Youth Forum recognised this role by providing young people with a platform to share their ideas and innovative solutions.
During the forum, the young people discussed a wide range of topics, including sustainable land management, ecosystem restoration and adaptation to climate change. They also explored the use of emerging technologies, such as remote sensing and artificial intelligence, to monitor and combat desertification.
In addition to the discussions, the forum also included field visits to land restoration projects in Saudi Arabia. The young people witnessed first-hand the efforts to reverse land degradation and restore vital ecosystems.
The UNCCD COP-16 Youth Forum was a resounding success, bringing together young leaders from around the world to address the urgent issue of desertification and land degradation. The forum provided a platform for young people to share their perspectives, learn from experts and contribute to global discussions on the issue. The young people who took part in the forum are now equipped with the knowledge and skills to lead the fight against desertification and land degradation, ensuring a more sustainable future for all.
