The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) is pleased to announce the launch of the AREF Research Development Fellowship Programme 2024/25. This initiative is designed to empower emerging African researchers who are tackling critical challenges in human health.
Programme overview
Objective:
The grant aims to improve the research skills of emerging leaders in Africa who address significant health issues, supporting their development into leading researchers.
What we offer:
The scholarship includes a three- to nine-month placement at a leading research institution in the UK, Europe or Africa. In addition, fellows will receive support at their home institution before and after the placement. The programme offers up to £47,000 in funding.Eligibility:
The grant is open to early career researchers, including post-doctoral scientists and clinicians with advanced qualifications, who are nationals of and employed in Africa. Detailed eligibility criteria are available on the programme portal.

Applicants are advised to read the guidance documents carefully before developing their proposals and starting their applications. The application form is available on the AREF portal: AREF Application Portal .
Important dates:
- Application deadline: 13h GMT, 4th October 2024
- Notification of results: until April 2025
- Scholarship start dates: between July 2025 and December 2025
Application preparation:
- Discuss your scholarship plans with the leaders of the employing and host organisations at the beginning of the process to ensure their support.
- AREF does not reimburse your Employing Organisation for your salary while you are away on placement: however, we do support reasonable accommodation, travel and training costs.
