Applications are now open for the ETH for Development (ETH4D) Visiting Student Grant 2024 for LMIC students. The worldwide exchange of ideas and knowledge is key to producing world-class research and education. This grant aims to remove financial barriers for students from low- and middle-income countries to visit ETH Zurich.

The ETH4D Visiting Student Grant provides funding for ETH professors to invite a student from a low- or middle-income country to ETH Zurich for a research stay of 3 to 6 months. The visiting student must be enrolled as a master's student (MA/MSc) at their home institution. Visiting students have the opportunity to learn new methodologies, build their networks and develop their research projects in a new academic environment.

Financing

The grant covers the following expenses up to a maximum of 16.5 kCHF:

  • Subsistence allowance during research stay: 2.3 kCHF per month
  • Economy return ticket to and from Switzerland (max. 2 kCHF)
  • Visa fees

The grant awarded will be transferred to the teacher's ETH account. The teacher is responsible for the administration and reporting of the finances.

Eligibility

  • ETH professors can invite a visiting student.
  • Professors can invite a doctoral student who is enrolled at a university or research institute in a country listed in the  OECD/DAC list . 
  • Preference will be given to students from less developed countries with low and lower-middle incomes.

Application

The application for the ETH4D Student Project Scholarship comprises two stages:

  • Host teacher's application to ETH4D for the scholarship via the electronic application form. The following documents are required:
    • Description of the project and objectives to be achieved during the research stay, including (maximum 750 words). The project description should include:
      • Background and research questions
      • Main activities during the research stay
      • Expected results and deliverables
      • Main lessons learnt during the stay
    • Deadline and work plan in the form of a Gantt chart
    • Student motivation letter (max. 1 page)
    • Student CV (max. 2 pages), including list of publications and two references
    • Student's most recent transcripts
    • Letter of support from the ETH Zurich host professor, including statement of any financial and in-kind contributions
  • Student project mobility application through the ETH Zurich Student Exchange Office to obtain admission and Project Mobility Student status.
