The teams that present the best ideas at each regional event will receive a cash prize. In addition, an overall winner will be selected to take part in an incubator programme organised by Lineage to scale or further develop the proposed solution.

The challenge

Post-harvest food waste represents a significant global challenge, affecting food security, quality and market access. Particularly in developing and emerging regions, the absence of affordable and scalable solutions accelerates this problem, resulting in the loss of valuable food resources that could feed millions of people.

During the Lineage Food Chain Innovation Challenge, participants will present their innovative technologies or data solutions that address post-harvest food waste, considering its multifaceted impact on communities and economies.

Participants are encouraged to focus their solutions on one of the following themes:

• Reducing food waste: Technologies and strategies to minimise post-harvest food waste throughout the supply chain, from farm to market, considering factors such as storage, transport and distribution.
• Innovative food preservation techniques: New methods or devices for preserving the freshness and quality of food, extending shelf life and reducing spoilage, especially in environments with limited resources.
• Access to nutritious food: designing solutions to improve access to nutritious food in disadvantaged areas, addressing challenges such as food distribution logistics, accessibility and availability of fresh produce.
• Insights e análises baseadas em dados: utilize análises de dados, dispositivos IoT e outras tecnologias para coletar insights sobre cadeias de abastecimento de alimentos, identificar áreas de desperdício e otimizar a alocação de recursos para obter máxima eficiência.

• Open to students and entrepreneurs of all ages, genders, backgrounds, geographies and industries. Individuals or teams can take part.
  • There are no country restrictions, but participants must be eligible to receive prizes (if they win) and it is their responsibility to pay any taxes on the prizes won.
• The competition is open to startups and early-stage companies.
• All entries must comply with local business regulations and laws.

Team formation and registration

• Size of participating team: Teams can be made up of between 1 and 5 members.
• No changes to team members will be allowed after 30 September 2024. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis by the Food Chain Innovation Challenge committee.
• Teams must be made up exclusively of participants who are not organisers, volunteers, judges, sponsors or any other privileged position in the event.
• Judges are not eligible to participate in the Food Chain Innovation Challenge. They can, however, advise and support the teams before the pitches on the day of the event.
• Participants/teams must submit a detailed business plan, including market viability, a description of the product or service, financial projections and clearly indicate the impact their solution will have on minimising post-harvest food waste.

Judging Criteria

• Innovation: Originality and creativity of the idea.
• Feasibility: Practical implementation of the idea and potential for success.
• Impact: Potential impact on the market and benefit for industry or society.
• Presentation: Clarity, persuasiveness and professionalism of the presentation.
• Team capacity: The team's ability to carry out the plan.

Application

The application form asks participants to describe their ideas. Entries and attractive presentations should aim to reduce waste, improve food preservation techniques and improve access to nutritious food. In addition, it should be adaptable to various socio-economic contexts, ensuring scalability and accessibility. Participants can also submit a short presentation (5 to 7 slides) with additional information (optional).
