The Harold W. McGraw Jr. Center for Business Journalism offers experienced journalists grants of up to US$15,000 and the editorial support needed to produce in-depth business and investigative stories that delve into critical economic, financial, or business issues across a wide range of subjects. You don't need to be a business reporter to apply; many previous fellows have been generalists or have covered areas such as health, education, or the environment. Others have focused on issues such as economic inequality or corporate accountability.

Grant
- The grant offers a donation of up to US$15,000 for each project. The exact amount will depend on the time required to complete the project and the necessary expenses.
Eligibility
- Open to anyone with at least five years' professional experience in journalism.
- They support the work of freelance journalists, as well as reporters and editors who currently work for a news organization or a non-profit journalistic organization. In the latter case, reporters and editors can apply directly on behalf of their organization.

- Applicants must submit a well-focused story proposal, no more than three pages long, via the accompanying online form. Think of it as a sales pitch, the same way you would submit one to an editor of a newspaper, magazine, audio, or digital media outlet: provide sufficient preliminary reports and documentation to demonstrate that the story is sound.
- The proposal should highlight what is new and significant about the story, why it is important, and what its potential impact could be. The proposal should also indicate where significant stories on the subject have been published elsewhere and how the proposed piece would differ. Applicants should also briefly outline a proposed reporting plan and a timeline for completing the story. And while you don't need to have a media outlet prepared for your story before applying, if you do, please state that in your proposal.
- In addition, applicants must attach three samples of journalism. Samples should be professionally published work that demonstrates their ability to tackle an in-depth story in the proposed medium. Please also provide organizers with an updated resume. References are not required at the time of application, but shortlisted finalists will be required to provide references from two editors or other individuals familiar with their work. Freelance applicants for whom obtaining references is a problem may discuss alternatives with the McGraw Center.
