The Pulitzer Center seeks to support journalists and newsrooms that represent the diversity of communities impacted by AI technologies. The fellowship is designed for reporters from all areas, newsrooms, and formats who wish to broaden, deepen, and diversify reporting on artificial intelligence with a responsible lens.

Journalists need to apply for a reporting project they wish to undertake during their fellowship. They encourage business and accountability projects that utilize a variety of approaches – including data analysis, records requests, and shoe leather reporting – to investigate the real-world impact of algorithms on policies, individuals, and communities.

In its first year, the Fellowship supported 10 fellows who submitted reports in 10 countries. The 2022 cohort of AI Accountability Fellows reported on crucial themes for equity and human rights, such as the impact of AI on the gig economy, social welfare, policing, migration, and border control.

While they welcome projects on a wide range of issues, this year they are also placing special emphasis on certain topics. They seek to support at least one project on transparency and governance in relation to AI. This includes projects that track money across borders; shed light on opaque and harmful AI supply chains; or report on legislation, business practices, and organizations that exacerbate the lack of accountability and transparency in AI systems.

  • A brief statement of purpose: how this fellowship fits into your career and why you are best positioned to be an AI Accountability Fellow. (500 words)
  • A detailed description of the reporting project you intend to carry out during your fellowship. Do not propose general topics, but propose a concrete project that includes some preliminary reporting on the subject. An attractive and well-researched project proposal, with a reporting plan, will help you stand out among dozens of candidates. (500 words)
  • A budget that outlines the projected costs of the project. Categories may include registration requests, software, data analysis, travel and accommodation, and stipends.
  • Three examples (links) of your best stories published in the last three years (not necessarily about artificial intelligence).
  • A letter of commitment or interest from a media organization that would publish your story(ies). If you are a staff reporter, a letter signed by your editor or newsroom manager confirming that you have their support in applying for the AI Accountability Fellowship. This letter should explicitly state that your newsroom will make time for you to participate in Fellowship activities and will support the publication of the stories you produce through this Fellowship. It may also include information about why your manager thinks you would be a good fit for this fellowship.
  • Three professional references: these can be contact information or letters of recommendation.
  • A copy of your CV or curriculum vitae.
