Deadline: 1st September 2024

Applications are now open for the One World Media Climate & Labour Film Grant 2024 . The Pulitzer Center, the Financial Times and One World Media are pleased to announce a new film partnership focused on climate change and labour. They are looking for an experienced filmmaker who wants to explore, through a short documentary, how climate change is affecting lives and work in the global south. They want to amplify new perspectives, stories and voices on climate change, with a special focus on economic transition.

Through Pulitzer's Our Work/Environment initiative, journalists have documented some of the risks of rising temperatures for workers in fields and factories. Over the past two years, reporters have travelled across India and to Nigeria, Ghana, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uruguay, Paraguay and South Africa to document the impact of heat and extreme weather on some of the world's most vulnerable workers - including women who are often heads of households - and encourage stories that detail the interconnected nature of business, climate and consumer choices. They want to understand workers. They want to understand companies. They appreciate accountability reports.

Benefits

The successful film-maker will receive the following:

  • Funding of up to £20,000 for your film
  • An executive nominated for his support of documentary film and production
  • A commission from the Financial Times with his latest film available for free on the FT platform.
  • Global promotion of the three partners' films and associated screenings
  • Member of OWM's global alumni network
  • And an industry mentor

Eligibility

  • The candidate must be from the global South and work in the global South. They are particularly interested in hearing creative proposals, ideas that are newsworthy, that cover a little-publicised story or that listen to people who often go unheard and that offer unexpected or rare access to working conditions and workplaces.
  • More than 5 years' proven experience as a documentary film-maker. They want to see links to recent work, broadcast credits or festival screenings.

Application

To enrol you will need to show:

  • References from a previous commissioner/executive.
  • A recorded pitch (3 minutes or less) - it can be filmed on your phone or an audio recording - about your idea.
  • A written synopsis of your idea with a detailed budget.
  • If your film depends on negotiating specific access or following a specific person/subject, they want you to show how advanced you are in these discussions.
