The Academy Fellowship Programme at the Harvard Academy of International and Area Studies is a prestigious opportunity for recent PhDs and doctoral candidates in the social sciences. This programme seeks to support scholars whose work combines excellence in a social science discipline with in-depth knowledge of countries or regions outside the United States and Canada.

About the Programme:

The programme identifies and encourages outstanding scholars at the start of their academic careers. The Academy's selected fellows exhibit resourcefulness, initiative and originality in their research, which crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries and addresses comparative, transnational or national issues. The programme aims to build a diverse and inclusive community of academics dedicated to innovative and interdisciplinary research.

Booking details:

• Duration: Two-year resident postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA.
• Stipend: $ 80,000 per year.
• Benefits: Substantial financial and research assistance, mentoring from senior fellows at Harvard Academy and opportunities to get involved in interdisciplinary activities.

Eligibility:

• Open to doctoral students or PhD students in the social sciences.
• Candidates must have received their doctorate within two years of the start date of 1 August 2025.
• Advanced doctoral candidates in the dissertation completion phase must provide degree award documentation by 30 June 2025.
• Previous post-doctoral fellows at Harvard are not eligible.

Terms:

• Five to six fellows are selected each year.
• Appointments should begin in the autumn following the scholarship offer.
• A single leave of up to 12 months can be requested between the first and second year for permanent teaching positions.
• No other funding, awards or obligations may be accepted during the scholarship.

  • Curriculum vitae (CV) with list of publications.
  • Research proposal (2,000 words maximum) detailing the intellectual objectives and the planned methodological and disciplinary work.
  • A sample of academic writing (up to 50 pages in English).
  • Transcript of the doctoral programme.
  • Three confidential letters of recommendation.
