- Member states, regional, international and non-governmental organisations and individuals are encouraged to submit nominations.
- Organisations are asked to submit a "parity+ list" of up to four nominees, including an equal or greater number of women. In the spirit of increasing geographical diversity, member states may nominate an additional candidate from an under-represented region (of a different nationality).
- Self-nominations are also accepted.
- Candidates who meet the minimum requirements for the positions of Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) and Special Envoy, including a minimum of 20 years of relevant professional experience.
- External and internal UN members are eligible. Internal staff must have served at the D1 level or above and must meet the other eligibility requirements.
Appointment
After an internal review process, candidates who fulfil the minimum requirements will be included in the SRSG/SDRSG/Special Envoy group. Only those deemed suitable for specific positions, as and when vacancies arise, will be invited to take part in a competitive selection process.
