The United Nations Secretary-General has launched a global call for nominations to expand and diversify the pool of Special Representatives of the Secretary-General (SRSG), Deputy Special Representatives of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) and Special Envoys in Peacekeeping Operations and Special Political Missions. This initiative seeks exceptional leaders with the knowledge, skills, abilities, values and behaviours needed to guide the complex field missions of the United Nations.
Objective of the Global Call
- Promote gender parity and geographical diversity at the highest levels of UN field missions.
- Strengthen the leadership and effectiveness of UN missions by broadening and diversifying the pool of candidates.
Nomination and application process
- Deadline: 15 July 2024.
- Eligibility: Member States, regional, international and non-governmental organisations and individuals.
- Submission guidelines:
- Organisations are asked to submit a "parity+ list" of up to four nominees, guaranteeing an equal or greater number of women candidates.
- Member States may nominate an additional candidate from an under-represented region (of a different nationality) to increase geographical diversity.
- Self-nominations are also accepted and welcome.

Review and Selection
- Internal Review: Candidates who fulfil the minimum requirements will be included in the RESG/DSRSG/Special Envoy group.
- Competitive Selection: Only those deemed suitable for specific positions, as and when vacancies arise, will be invited to take part in a competitive selection process.
