The Hurford Programme seeks to develop leadership skills, improve organisational talent and harness the potential of emerging democratic leaders from around the world. Through the Fellowship programme, young activists spend three months in Washington DC, during which they expand their global network, learn lessons from activists in democratic movements around the world and contribute to the development of the World Movement for Democracy. Fellows are expected to organise online discussions to generate active engagement among young activists around the world. Hurford Youth Fellows will participate in strategy meetings, conduct research and organise and lead presentations and information-sharing sessions on the following specific areas described in the "What's next? Youth Declaration:"

  • Expanding civic space for young people
  • Fighting disinformation
  • Building Citizen-Centred Accountability
  • Delivering Democracy

Brotherhood activities

Specifically, each fellow will be involved in the following activities:

  • Carry out research on a topic related to democracy issues.
  • Develop online resources, such as a collection of related publications and training materials.
  • Facilitate online discussions.
  • Contribute to the World Movement's social media posts.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of other World Movement activities.
  • Attend relevant events and discussions in Washington, DC, to deepen your understanding of the issues and build working relationships.
  • Creatively identify, compile, present and share discussion materials and results.

Each scholar will also make at least one formal presentation of their work during the scholarship.
Presentations can be open to the public or aimed at a more select audience and will usually focus on
the subject of the scholar's project.

Benefits

  • Each fellow will receive a monthly stipend for living expenses, as well as basic health insurance and travel to and from Washington, DC. The stipends take into account the cost of living in Washington, DC
  • Fellows have a fully equipped office, including Internet access and e-mail, and a limited budget for long-distance telephone calls related to the fellowship.

Eligibility

  • Open to candidates from any country.
  • Candidates must not be older than 30.
  • They must demonstrate a strong interest in democratic activism and the advancement of democracy in their respective communities, as well as around the world.
  • Young people affiliated with civil society organisations are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • A working knowledge of English is an important prerequisite for participation in the programme for general communication purposes. All application materials must be submitted in English.
