Deadline: 1st September 2024

Applications are now open for readers of the Mandela Washington Scholarship 2025 for Young African Leaders . The US State Department and IREX are looking for academic, professional and regional experts to read and score applications for the Mandela Washington 2025 Fellowship for Young African Leaders. During the fellowship's first nine years, the programme received nearly 434,000 applications from 49 sub-Saharan African countries for 7,200 fellowship slots. Your talents and experience in helping to assess the high volume of applications are greatly appreciated!

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship programme of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). The Fellowship brings young leaders to the United States for academic courses and leadership training to create unique opportunities for Fellows and US citizens to collaborate, stimulate economic growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and improve peace and security in Africa and the United States. In the summer of 2025, the Fellowship will bring up to 700 young leaders to the United States for a comprehensive executive-style programme designed to develop skills and empower Fellows to lead in their respective sectors and communities.

Readers will be responsible for evaluating approximately 50 applications based on set guidelines and a scoring rubric. This is an excellent voluntary professional development and CV-building opportunity for professionals or individuals seeking a degree. Readers will be exposed to the challenges and proposed solutions in sub-Saharan Africa and to key processes in international and higher education.

Eligibility

  • Ideal readers are academics and/or professionals with experience in one or more of the thematic areas of scholarship (business, civic engagement or public management), or who have experience of working in Africa or on sub-Saharan African issues.
  • US government employees and Fellowship alumni are eligible.
  • Applicants for the 2024 scholarship are not eligible to be readers.

Application

The readers will be responsible for assessing the candidates for the programme on the basis of the defined guidelines and a scoring rubric via an online system. The reading period will begin in September 2024 and end in early November. Each selected Reader will analyse approximately 50 applications and may request more. Each application analysis takes between 5 and 10 minutes.
