Deadline: 16 June 2024
Applications are now open for the Leiden African Studies Centre (ASCL) Visiting Fellowship Programme 2025 . The selected fellows will be able to use the excellent library of the Leiden Centre for African Studies, collaborate and interact with colleagues and participate in ASCL's regular seminars.
The African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL) is the only multidisciplinary academic knowledge institute in the Netherlands dedicated entirely to the study of Africa. It is an inter-doctoral institute of Leiden University.
ASCL has an open call for scholarships for 2025. The scholarship lasts 90 days:
- January February March; or
- April May June; or
- September October November
Benefits
A research grant includes:
- A return ticket (economy class).
- Cost of living cover (flat rate).
- Accommodation in Leiden: you will receive your own single bed/living room. The kitchen and bathroom must be shared with a maximum of two other scholars (male/female). The rooms are on the ground floor, with the landlord and landlady living on the ground floor. If the accommodation offered is unacceptable to the scholar (for example, a scholar wishing to travel with a partner or child), they are expected to find alternative accommodation in or near Leiden themselves. The alternative accommodation will not be paid for by the scholarship/institute. The institute cannot assist the scholar in finding alternative accommodation.
- Medical/liability insurance (please note that this insurance does not cover the cost of treating a pre-existing medical condition).
- The use of (shared) office facilities and library facilities.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a Visiting Research Fellowship, the candidate must fulfil all of the following criteria.
He or she must:
- Hold a doctorate degree at the time of application;

- Have published books, book chapters and/or journal articles in recent years that meet international standards;
- In accordance with visa regulations, be ready to return to the country of which you are a citizen and/or current resident upon completion of your scholarship.
When assessing applications that fulfil these requirements,
- Preference will be given to candidates living in Africa. 'Africa' here refers to the member states of the African Union. 'Based in' Africa means having lived in Africa for at least two of the last four years; and
- Emphasis will be placed on the quality and feasibility of the intended work and the results of the scholarship (labelled "research proposal" on the application form).
