Position context

Basic information

The IOM is a signatory to the Grand Bargain commitments, recognising the flexibility, efficiency and effectiveness of cash-based interventions (CBI). IOM is committed to institutionalising and increasing the use of CBI as a modality of assistance in all its activities. CBI involves the provision of cash transfers and/or vouchers to individuals, families or communities for the direct purchase of and access to goods or services. IOM's CBI portfolio currently reaches almost 3.9 million people in 112 countries.

The intern will be placed in the CBI Unit of the Humanitarian Response and Recovery Department at IOM Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The CBI Unit leads efforts to increase, coordinate and standardise the use of CBI to deliver assistance across the organisation and implement the IOM CBI Strategy 2022-2026.

Supervision

The Cash-Based Interventions (CBI) Support Intern will work under the general supervision of the Senior CBI Officer and the direct supervision of the CBI Officer.

Main Functions/Responsibilities

  1. Collect, organise and store practical tools, templates and guidance documents developed by the CBI Unit and IOM Country Offices. Maintaining the online repository and updating relevant websites.
  2. Supporting the revision of tools and guidance documents and contributing to the creation of new tools and harmonised models for implementing the IWC, with a focus on mainstreaming protection and cross-cutting issues.
  3. Participate in meetings and forums related to the CBI; prepare discussion points, briefings and meeting minutes as required.
  4. Assist in planning, coordinating and documenting events, such as meetings, and contribute to capacity-building efforts, including webinars, workshops and trainings.
  5. Supporting the review of project proposals prior to endorsement, when necessary.
  6. Compile information from IOM Country Offices on CBI and assist in the development of content and graphic design for reports, articles, guidance documents and presentations.
  7. Conduct evidence-based research and literature reviews on new and innovative technologies with the potential to improve the delivery and use of CBI in preparedness, emergency, transition and recovery operations.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and experience required

Education

  • Master's degree in Humanitarian Affairs, Development Studies, Political Science, International Relations or related field from an accredited academic institution or other field of study with equivalent humanitarian work experience.

Experience

  • Strong and demonstrable interest in humanitarian work.
  • Experience with data analysis and reporting tools such as PowerBI and Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with graphic and web design software is an advantage.
  • Experience in research projects is an advantage.

Skills

  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Proficiency in standard Microsoft Office tools.
  • Ability to understand the organisation's structure and portfolios.
  • Proven ability to produce quality work with precision and conciseness according to deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a diverse team.
  • Practical knowledge of graphic and web design software is an advantage.

languages

  • Fluency in English (oral and written) is required. A working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an advantage.

Eligibility and Selection

Election criteria

  • Candidates should have a specific interest or studies related to areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities.
  • Applicants must have a scholarship for internships in international organisations, or need an internship to complete their studies, or be sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions or academia.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme or have graduated within the last 12 months.
  • Applicants must be at least 20 years old.
