Introduction Every year, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) opens its doors to hundreds of trainees around the world. With a presence in almost 600 locations around the world, IOM assists governments in managing migratory flows, ensuring safe and orderly migration. To support its mandate, the IOM needs diverse professionals from a variety of backgrounds. However, recognising the challenges some face in accessing internships due to location or personal circumstances, IOM launched the Diversity and Inclusion Internship Programme.
Programme overview The Diversity and Inclusion Internship Programme aims to address imbalances by providing financial support for accommodation, living expenses, travel and visa costs for selected interns. These six-month internships are highly competitive, usually involving online tests and interviews. Since its creation in 2018, the programme has offered between 15 and 20 places annually, targeting talented individuals from under-represented groups.
Focus of the 2024 Programme In 2024, the IOM's Diversity and Inclusion Internship Programme emphasises two components:
- Traineeships for nationals of non- or under-represented Member States: Six vacancies are open exclusively to individuals from these states, promoting diversity in the IOM workforce.
- Internships for People with Disabilities: Nine vacancies are dedicated to candidates who identify themselves as people with disabilities, promoting inclusion and providing opportunities for career development.
Testimonials from programme participants Participants in the Diversity and Inclusion Internship Programme expressed gratitude for the life-changing opportunities it offered. From gaining valuable experience to defining career plans, the programme has left a profound impact on interns' personal and professional growth. Testimonials from previous participants highlight the importance of the programme in creating a positive working environment and preparing individuals for future endeavours.
2024 Programme vacancies In 2024, the Diversity and Inclusion Internship Programme offers 15 vacancies, including home-based and on-site roles. The home-based positions provide flexibility, allowing interns to work remotely, while the on-site positions require presence at the duty station. Successful candidates will receive a monthly stipend, guidance on international careers and support in preparing CVs and cover letters.
Registration process Interested candidates can apply online via IOM's electronic recruitment system, ensuring that qualifications match the requirements of the position. There are no associated fees and reasonable accommodation is available on request. Shortlisted candidates will undergo further assessment, usually through online interviews with selection panels.
Internship opportunities The programme offers a variety of internship opportunities in various offices, including roles in talent management, information technology, security, legal and more. Positions are available in locations such as Geneva, Bangkok, Nairobi, Valencia, Panama City, Rabat, Warsaw, Skopje and home support for offices in Port Moresby, Dakar and Bogotá.
