Revealing the Legacy
Celebrating its 62nd year, the United Nations Graduate Studies Programme (GSP) in Geneva is a testament to the UN's commitment to promoting global education and cooperation. With a rich history of training more than 3,000 young minds from over 110 countries, the GSP continues to play a key role in shaping the leaders of tomorrow. This intensive two-week summer seminar serves as a unique platform for participants to delve into the complexities of the United Nations and gain insights into "International Geneva" through a combination of first-hand observations, lectures, research and networking.
The 62nd GSP: Summit of the Future
Mark your calendar for the Future Summit, which will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 22 to 23 September 2024. Described as a once in a generation opportunity, this summit aims to strengthen collaboration on critical global challenges. It will be held in New York on 22 September 2024, to bridge gaps in global governance and reaffirm commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Charter. The focus is on ushering in a revitalised multilateral system, better equipped to positively impact lives around the world. UN member states will come together to lay the foundations for more effective global co-operation, addressing current challenges and anticipating future threats.
The culmination of the Summit will be the intergovernmentally negotiated "Pact for the Future", made up of five key chapters:
- Sustainable Development and Financing for Development
- International Peace and Security
- Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Co-operation
- Youth and Future Generations
- Transforming global governance
In preparation for the summit, the UN Secretary-General issued eleven Policy Briefs by providing in-depth information on specific proposals described in the "Our Common Agenda". These notes are intended to guide member states in their preparations for the summit.
62nd SPG: Challenges and Opportunities
Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, the 62nd GSP will take place from 1 to 12 July 2024 under the theme "Summit of the Future: Challenges and Opportunities". The programme includes morning lectures by representatives of the UN, international organisations, civil society leaders and diplomats. The afternoons will be dedicated to group projects, visits to institutions and research, with the students organised into five working groups aligned with the chapters of the Pact for the Future. Students will present their findings through short papers and presentations at the conclusion of the programme. Emphasising student-led and student-owned collaboration, the process will have limited facilitator support.
Application details
Although the GSP offers a transformative experience, participants should be prepared for an intensive programme, requiring an average time commitment of 8 to 10 hours a day over ten days. Although participation is free, participants are responsible for covering visa, travel, food and accommodation costs in Geneva. Unfortunately, the United Nations Office at Geneva cannot provide scholarships or sponsorship.
