Applications are now open for the Georgetown Law Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Programme 2024-2025. The LAWA Fellowship Programme was founded in 1993 at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC, in order to train women human rights defenders from Africa who are committed to returning home to their countries in order to advance the status of women and girls in their own countries throughout their careers.
More than 80 women human rights defenders from Botswana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe have participated in the LAWA Programme and hope to include scholars from other countries in the future.
The entire LAWA Fellowship Programme lasts approximately 14 months (from July of the first year to August of the following year), after which the LAWA Fellows return home to continue defending women's rights in their own countries. The LAWA Programme begins in July, when the fellows attend the Foundations of American Law and Legal Education course at Georgetown Law Center.

- You must be a women's human rights lawyer from Africa to be considered. You must hold an LL.B. or other law degree. Preference is given to candidates who:
- currently live and work in Africa, and
- do not yet have a master's degree.
- The strongest candidates tend to be around five to ten years out of law school, but those with less or more experience will be considered. Candidates with no professional experience who apply directly for a bachelor's degree in law or another law school will not be considered.
- Men and women committed to women's rights are strongly encouraged to apply.
- As a requirement of participation in the LAWA Programme, all candidates must commit to returning home to their own countries upon completion of the Fellowship and to using their best professional efforts to promote women's human rights throughout their careers.
- You must have strong English language skills, both written and oral. Language problems have been the main barrier to success for LAWA scholars.
- The LAWA Programme requires candidates to become proficient in the use of computers for writing papers and conducting research. Candidates are strongly encouraged to learn basic computer skills prior to arrival in order to make this transition easier. At the very least, candidates should work on improving their typing speed.
- Applicants must be prepared to enter a very demanding course of study. LAWA Scholars take four compulsory subjects and several electives over the course of two academic semesters. Each class requires advance preparation by reading hundreds of pages. Scholars must produce a master's thesis totalling no less than 40 pages, including several drafts with intense research, writing and editing. Successful completion of the programme requires exceptional focus and a lot of hard work. Please do not enrol if you are not prepared to make this serious commitment.
Application
This application must be completed on a computer. Handwritten applications will not be accepted. This application and all reference letters must be in English. Your qualifications for the LAWA programme will be assessed on your ability to follow the instructions in the application.
Completed applications must be sent by email to paramorrisjc@georgetown.eduaté on Friday 19 January 2024.
