About the programme

Our Visiting Doctoral Fellowship Programme gives registered doctoral students the opportunity to use UNU-WIDER's resources and facilities for their doctoral thesis or dissertation research on developing economies, and to work with our researchers in areas of mutual interest.

Visiting doctoral fellows normally spend three consecutive months at UNU-WIDER before returning to their home institution. During their time in Helsinki, the fellows prepare one or more research papers and present a seminar on their research results. They may also have the opportunity to publish their research in the WIDER Working Paper Series .

Selection criteria

Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral programme and have demonstrated the ability to conduct research on developing economies. Candidates working in other social sciences may apply, but should bear in mind that UNU-WIDER is an economics-focused institute. Candidates should be fluent in oral and written English and possess good quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills. Applications from suitably qualified early career researchers, women and developing countries are particularly encouraged. The programme is especially aimed at researchers in the later stages of their PhD.

The Visiting Doctorate Scholarship Programme is highly competitive and only a limited number of scholars can be accepted. In recent years, one per cent of all applications have been successful.

Financial assistance

UNU-WIDER provides a travel grant to cover the costs of travelling to and from your doctoral institution, medical insurance (for medical and hospital services resulting from illness and accident during your stay at UNU-WIDER) and a monthly stipend of 1,850 euros to cover living expenses in Helsinki during the period of your scholarship. The programme does not provide services or cover expenses related to dependents. Please note that the monthly salary mentioned below only applies to the period of stay in Helsinki, not online.

Application procedure

UNU-WIDER only receives online applications for the Visiting Doctoral Scholarship Programme twice a year. The deadlines for submitting applications are 31 March and 30 September 23:59 UTC+3 each year. When the enrolment period is active, a link to the enrolment form will be available on our website. opportunities page. By enrolling in September, you would be visiting UNU-WIDER for three months during the period March-June of the following year, and by enrolling in March, you would be visiting UNU-WIDER for three months during September-November of the same year.

Selected candidates will be informed by e-mail of final decision in four weeks after the closing date. Selected candidates must confirm their decision to accept UNU-WIDER's offer two weeks after being contacted.

As part of your application, you will be asked to upload your curriculum vitae. Your doctoral supervisor will need to provide UNU-WIDER with a letter of reference, which should be sent by e-mail (by your supervisor) to the following address: phdreference@wider.unu.edu. The reference letter will also be used to certify that you are enrolled in a doctoral programme at your university.
