The YC hosts two 3-month programmes - one from January to March and one from June to August. See what happens during the 3-month YC programme:
The Objective
YC's overall goal is to help startups really take off. They come to YC at all different stages. Some haven't even started working, and others have been launched for a year or more. But whatever stage a startup is at when it arrives, our goal is to help it be in dramatically better shape 3 months later.
For most startups, better shape translates into two things: having a better product with more users and having more options for raising money.
Startups at all stages benefit from the intensity of the YC. That's probably the best word to describe the atmosphere. For 3 months, it's all startup, all the time. Everyone around you - us, the other founders in your batch, the alumni, the speakers, the investors - wants to help your startup succeed. In this environment, it's hard not to be highly motivated. And that kind of extraordinary motivation is what you need to do something as difficult as starting a startup.
Many founders describe the 11 weeks leading up to Demo Day as the most productive period of their lives. Although the YC continues after the 3-month cycle, and the alumni community is an increasingly valuable resource, those 11 weeks are still the most important thing. You can't make people something they're not, but the right conditions can bring out the best in them. And because most people have much more potential than they realise, they are often surprised by what they are capable of.
Financing
YC invest US$ 500,000 in each company in standard terms. Our investment of US$ 500,000 is made in 2 separate vaults:
- We invested US$ 125,000 in a post-cash vault in exchange for 7% from your company (the "US$ 125,000 vault")
- We invested US$ 375,000 in an unlimited vault with a Most Favoured Nation ("MFN") provision (the "MFN vault")
Groups
During the batch, the startups are categorised into four groups. Each group is led by group partners who advise the founders in individual and group office hours. Each group is divided into 12-14 sections (6-10 companies), so the founders get the benefit of an intimate environment within the larger batch.
Opening hours
Much of what happens at YC takes place during office hours. The group's partners organise group office hours every fortnight and individual office hours as often as the founders wish. What the startups talk about during office hours depends on the stage of the company and where they are in the YC cycle.
