O International Science Partnership Fund The £119 million programme is designed to enable potential and promote prosperity. It puts research and innovation at the centre of the UK's international relations, supporting UK researchers and innovators to work with colleagues around the world on the key issues of our time. It is managed by the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology. Delivered by a consortium of the UK's leading research and innovation bodies.

The aim of the Global Innovation Fellowships is to provide opportunities for UK-based early and mid-career researchers from across the humanities and social sciences to develop their skills, networks and careers in the creative and cultural, public, private and policy sectors to address challenges that require innovative approaches and solutions. Through the Global Innovation Fellowships, researchers from the SHAPE community will be supported to create new and deeper connections beyond academia, thus enabling the mobilisation and translation of knowledge as well as the development of individual skills.

This is a new programme for the British Academy and, in this pilot phase, we are pleased to offer opportunities for Global Innovation Fellowship award holders to join and be based in the offices of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

In a complex, changing and increasingly contested world, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace generates strategic ideas and independent analyses, supports diplomacy and trains the next generation of international scholar-professionals to help countries and institutions tackle the most difficult global problems and safeguard peace. It is recognised as the leading global foreign policy think tank. Carnegie experts are thinkers and doers from diverse disciplines and perspectives who work together across borders on issues such as democracy, technology, and climate change, with deep knowledge and understanding of regional contexts in Asia, Africa, Europe, India, the Middle East, and Russia and Eurasia.

The aim is to have a mutually beneficial partnership between the fellow and Carnegie, with each able to draw on new perspectives and expand their networks and reach. It will enable the award holder to strengthen and create new links between policy and academia, allowing for the mobilisation and translation of knowledge, as well as the opportunity to develop new approaches and solutions to policy challenges by providing a different perspective.

Applications are invited in any of the following five areas:

  • Sustainability, Climate and Geopolitics.
  • Technology and International Affairs.
  • Democracy, Conflict and Governance.
  • Global Order and Institutions.
  • Nuclear policy.

There are no preconceived ideas about the awardee's disciplinary background, but the candidate will need to demonstrate a solid understanding of the relevant issues, including the applicable political landscape and the systemic challenges it faces. Language skills, where relevant, are desirable but not essential.

Date of opening of the scheme: 10th July 2023

Application deadline: Applications must be submitted by 1 November 2023 at 17:00 GMT.

Period of commencement of the award: Global innovation fellowships must start by September 2024. An earlier start date of March or April 2024 may be possible, in which case the applicant will need to explain how they will plan and manage their relocation on this faster timescale.

Award level: The Academy is offering up to three one-year scholarships hosted at Carnegie offices in the USA (Washington DC or California). These are offered as awards of up to £150,000 for 12 months duration (with Full Costing on 80%).
