Applications are now open for the Environmental Photographer of the Year 2023 competition . Now in its 16th year, The Environmental Photographer of the Year competition presents the most inspiring environmental photography from around the world. The award celebrates humanity's ability to survive and innovate and presents thought-provoking images that draw attention to our impact and inspire us to live sustainably.
The Environmental Photographer of the Year competition supports the urgent calls to action of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, recording the intricate interconnected nature of development, poverty reduction, equality, security and climate action and the unprecedented effort from all sectors of society needed to address the defining issues of our time.

Prizes
- Environmental Photographer of the Year The main prize will be awarded to a single photo that promotes people's understanding of the causes and effects of environmental change and social inequality, highlights solutions to the climate and ecological emergency and inspires us to live sustainably. This category is open to professional and amateur photographers of all ages from all over the world. The winner will receive a cash prize of £5,000, as well as an interview in CIWEM's Environment Magazine, a profile on the WaterBear website and a feature on the Nikon Europe website.
- Young Environmental Photographer of the Year In partnership with Nikon, this award showcases the best in environmental photography through the lens of young photographers aged 21 and under. This category recognises up-and-coming talent and is open to photographers aged 21 and under. The winner will receive a Z Series Mirrorless camera and two NIKKOR Z lenses of their choice, as well as an interview in CIWEM's Environment magazine and an article on the Waterbear and Nikon platforms.
- Additional cash prizes of £1,000 are awarded in the following four categories:

Eligibility
- The Environmental Photographer of the Year category is open to professional and amateur photographers of all ages from all over the world.
- The Young Environmental Photographer of the Year is open to photographers aged 21 and under.
- You can submit previously published photos, but don't submit photos that have already received an award or recognition in another international photography competition.
Application
The 2023 competition is open until 30 August. If any of your photographs are selected for publication, you will be contacted by the end of October about the next steps. The winners and shortlisted participants will be announced in November.
