Applications are now open for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme at the University of the Western Cape 2023/2024 . Launched in 2012, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme is a global initiative designed to develop the next generation of transformational leaders by enabling highly talented and service-oriented young people, particularly African youth, to pursue higher education and cultivate their leadership potential.
The Programme is aimed specifically at young people whose access to higher education is hindered by respiratory and social barriers. The Programme places special emphasis on reaching young women, forcibly displaced young people and young people living with disabilities. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme at UWC supports academically talented young people from South Africa and other parts of the African continent.
Enrolment is restricted to the following disciplines/areas of study:
- Humanities and Arts (Applied Linguistics, History, Gender Justice, Migration Studies, Sociology for Development);
- Community Health Sciences;
- Economic and Management Sciences (Development Studies, Information Sciences and Migration Studies);
- Law (Governance and Human Rights);
- Natural Sciences (Biological, Computational, Mathematical and Physical Sciences).

- For the 2023 academic year, UWC's Mastercard Foundation Scholars programme will provide fully funded opportunities for young academics from the African continent to study for a master's degree.
Eligibility
- Applicants must not be older than 30 for the postgraduate master's programme;
- Meet the university's minimum admission requirements;
- Be prepared to start the first year of enrolment for full-time master's study in 2023.
Application
A completed application must include the following in PDF format:
- A cover letter (saved under the name: Initial.Surname_Cover_Letter) stating the following:
- Personal history, including the family's financial situation.
- Why did you choose UWC?
- Where do you see yourself after graduation?
- Copies of your academic records (saved as in the example above: Academic Records). In addition to the final secondary school certificate, master's degree applicants must also include notarised copies of all degrees awarded by the university.
- A letter of recommendation (saved as above: Letter of Recommendation) from your previous supervisor or head of department/school. The letter must be current, official and signed.
- A recent passport photo (Photograph).
- A certified copy of your national identity document or passport (stored as above: Identity Document or Passport), including, where applicable, the visa and/or refugee/asylum seeker authorisation page.
