Rhodes Scholars come to the UK for two or more years and can apply to study most of the full-time postgraduate courses offered by the University of Oxford.

What does the Rhodes Scholarship cover?

Costs covered by the Exchange

The Rhodes Scholarship covers course fees at the University of Oxford, as well as providing an annual bursary. For the academic year 2021/22, the scholarship is £17,310 per year (£1,442.50 per month), from which scholars pay all living expenses, including accommodation. Please note - this is not enough to cover partners or dependants.

detailed document Conditions of Possession describes permitted combinations of degrees, and how many years of study are covered by the Bursary, as the latter depends on the choice of course - for example, up to three years of fees and bursary is available to Academics who choose to undertake a DPhil (PhD) at Oxford.

Following selection for the Scholarship, the Rhodes Trust will cover the fee required to apply to study at the University of Oxford. The Trust will cover the fee for a student visa and the associated International Health Surcharge (IHS), which allows international students to access the UK's National Health Service. The Rhodes Trust will cover two economy class flights - to and from the UK - to and from Oxford.

On arrival in Oxford, scholars receive a stipend and, for those scholars making the transition to a second course of study in Oxford, they will again receive assistance to cover the visa renewal fee and subsequent IHS application.

The selection criteria

The criteria that determined the first Rhodes Scholars in 1902 still guide us today:

  • literary and scholastic achievements (academic excellence)
  • energy to use their talents to the full (as demonstrated by mastery in areas such as sports, music, debating, dance, theatre and artistic activities, particularly when teamwork is involved)
  • truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy and protection of the weak, kindness, altruism and companionship
  • moral strength of character and instincts to lead and take an interest in their fellow human beings.
