In collaboration with News Corp and The Wall Street Journal, the ICFJ offers journalists from all over the world an opportunity to perfect their knowledge of digital journalism, as well as support for the development of data and/or digital initiative projects.
The 2023 News Corp Media Fellowship programme includes training in digital innovation, grant funding and an exclusive virtual newsroom placement with the WSJ. It builds on previous iterations of the Fellowship, which since 2014 has offered journalists an immersive experience in some of the world's most digitally advanced newsrooms.
During the fellowship, the journalist will be embedded virtually for three months (15 September - 15 December) with the WSJ. The selected News Corp Media Fellow will have the opportunity to:
- Contribute to WSJ projects by analysing public involvement and interactions with the newsletter
- Leading discussions among peers
- Promote an exchange of ideas and knowledge
- Establish new partnerships and relationships with WSJ teams
The fellow will also have the opportunity to travel and meet with WSJ colleagues in the office closest to them. This week-long on-site visit will include meetings with various teams and editors-in-chief.
The programme will cover all expenses during this one-week visit.
How to apply for a scholarship
To be considered for the scholarship, journalists must:
- Take part in two half-day webinars led by editors and reporters with experience in digital tools, data journalism and visualisation, artificial intelligence, mobile journalism and audience engagement. The webinars will be open to a selected group of up to 50 journalists. The webinars will take place on 12 and 26 April.
- Receive one of five news innovation grants to support a data- or digitally-driven project. Only journalists who participate in both webinars are eligible to apply for these grants. Projects should promote new forms of storytelling, data journalism and visualisation, or citizen engagement. Each fellow will also receive online editorial training and mentoring from experienced editors, reporters and experts.
Requirements for participation
English-speaking journalists and editors with experience working with data, audience engagement, or newsletters are welcome to apply for the webinars - the first step towards the fellowship. Journalists from all countries are eligible for the opportunity.
Although reporting skills are useful, the fellowship has a non-reporting component, focussing instead on audience, newsletters and other digital journalism skills. The selected journalist should not expect to receive phone lines during their fellowship.
